The speaker will be Marieke Schouwstra, School of Linguistics and English Language.

Abstract from the speaker:

"Human languages are complex and structured. How they became that way is not known, and also hard to study, since we cannot go back in time to see how our evolutionary ancestors communicated. Recently, studies of gesture and sign language have been taken up as a way to investigate the processes and biases that could have played a role in the emergence of human language."
